Jim Lambie

‘Sun Visor’, 2014
Spray paint & digital pigment print
53 x 73cm. Edition of 50.

Jim Lambie‚Äôs trip to Antigua gave him the opportunity to experience at first hand Caribbean culture as expressed in the island’s musical traditions and architecture. He also took the opportunity to visit Great Bird Island, a tiny islet that lies almost three kilometres north-east of Antigua and is home to a great number of rare and tropical species. The digital print ‘Sun Visor’ is Lambie’s interpretation of being ‘below another sky’: it features a red-billed Tropicbird, known for swooping down from great heights, as it flashes in to view under a blazing sun. Working in collaboration with Glasgow Print Studio’s master printers, Lambie produced a digital pigment print that explodes with colour (those of the Antiguan flag – black, yellow, blue, white and red – are represented at the bottom right of the image). Each edition was customised by the artist with what he describes as ‘spray painted suns of varying size and intensity, that soften into the spectrum of light rays.’
