My goal was to work with ice itself and through my concerns about the urgency of safeguarding the ice environments in high latitudes and altitudes, I hoped to draw attention to ice processes and to reveal its psychological, physical and poetic dimensions. Working closely with John McNaught, we embarked on experiments to produce a time-based sequence, a series of melting prints. More precisely, ‘The Secret Language of Ice’ involved screen-printing text on to ice and via time-lapse photography capturing the icemelt. Subsequently four images in the time-based sequence of melt were selected to produce a set of polymer photogravure prints. Not only does the photographic process provide a precise record of the journey with its meanders, which the dissolving ink makes across the ice surface, but it also reveals the inner mechanism of the ice in fascinating detail as it gradually melts away.
