Set of 12 photo etchings
Each work 69.6 x 51.7cm. Edition of 12.
During my residency I visited the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory to continue my exploration of astronomical sites. However, instead of experiencing clear dark skies – the ideal conditions to view stars – I was confronted with clouds. This series of etchings, which took clouds photographed over observatories in both India and Scotland as its starting point, is a meditation on the polarity of clouds in all their glorious variations and formations.
Though simple in compositional terms, the etchings proved to be technically complex. An exhaustive series of tests and experiments were done to arrive at the right dot, dpi, exposure and etch timings to ensure the subtleties of the clouds could be retained. All of the images, after being digitally corrected for contrast, were printed onto acetate and then exposed onto prepared steel plates coated with a light sensitive emulsion. Once developed, they were coated with aquatint and etched. Each plate was then printed individually by hand.
